Capturing noises and tones on site often requires a great deal of perseverance. Not only that you have to find suitable places that are not affected by man-made acoustic pollution, which unfortunately is becoming more and more difficult these days. You often have to visit these places on foot, which in turn means spending a lot of time outdoors in nature. Like the sound engineer who records various instruments in the studio, the location sound recordist is out and about in the field and has to find suitable spots in the acoustic hodgepodge. A no less important process is listening carefully for noise or other errors and problems while the recording is in progress. This in turn makes field recording a very relaxing activity that everyone should actually pursue. Especially in our fast-moving time, in which we only rush from here and there, it is important to pause, to capture and perceive the moment. That’s what I love about being out in the field and listening. Hear and just “be”!
